Chief Roberts began his law enforcement career in 1986 at the Ventura Police Department, CA. He was promoted through the ranks, and became Lieutenant in 1999. He served for 17 years as a member of the SWAT team, worked as a Patrol Watch Commander, Special Operations Commander and Professional Standards commander.
In 2006, Chief Roberts accepted a position as a Commander with the newly formed Citrus Heights Police Department in Sacramento County, CA as it transitioned from a county contract to municipal police department. Chief Roberts commanded both the Investigative Services Division and Patrol Services Division during his four-year tenure.
In 2010, Roberts became the Chief of Police for the Menlo Park Police Department near Palo Alto, CA. During this time, he implemented many organizational changes and reduced annual expenses by more than $700,000. Chief Roberts combined key management positions, re-aligned patrol and dispatch schedules, implemented a Community Service Officer Program and adopted a community volunteer program. In August 2012, Chief Roberts was selected as the Draper Police Chief.
In 2012, Chief Roberts was awarded the Master of Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Center for Homeland Defense and Security. The Master’s Program is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. In 2003, Chief Roberts received a Master of Public Administration from California State University Northridge. Chief Roberts received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Azusa Pacific University. He is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute of Policing sponsored by the Police Executive Research Forum and the California Police Officers Standards and Training Command College.
Chief Roberts is an Executive Fellow with the Police Foundation in Washington D.C. The foundation is dedicated to provide research and experimentation to improve the policing profession. Chief Roberts serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Utah Chiefs of Police Association. Chief Roberts also serves on the Police Advisory Committee for the Institute of Public Safety and Criminal Justice at Salt Lake Community College. Chief Roberts is a member of the California Police Chiefs Association, California Peace Officers Association, the Police Executive Research Forum and the National Tactical Officers Association. Chief Roberts served in the United States Marines from 1982 to 1986.
